Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO)
Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition
Facilitating market development across NORDEFCO
NORDEFCO (Nordic Defence Cooperation) is a defence collaboration among Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, established in 2009 to enhance collective defence capabilities and regional security. This cooperation builds on a history of Nordic defence efforts dating back to the Cold War but was formalised by merging three existing structures: NORDCAPS (Nordic Coordinated Arrangement for Military Peace Support), NORDAC (Nordic Armaments Cooperation), and NORDSUP (Nordic Supportive Defence Structures). The merger aimed to streamline and enhance defence cooperation, creating a unified framework to address both traditional defence needs and new security challenges. Each member contributes uniquely: Denmark and Norway, both NATO members, bring extensive international defence experience; Finland and Sweden, while not NATO members offer strong territorial defence capabilities; and Iceland, without a standing military, gains strategic support. NORDEFCO focuses on joint training, capability development, and operational coordination, enhancing regional stability and security through a unified approach to emerging challenges. NORDEFCO connects to critical minerals and the energy transition through regional security and collaboration, indirectly supporting supply chain stability and sustainability.
