Commonwealth of Independent States

Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition

Facilitating market development across the CIS

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was established in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The CIS serves as a regional organization aimed at fostering cooperation in political, economic, and security affairs among its member states, which include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The CIS region is rich in critical minerals essential for various industries, including technology, renewable energy, and defence. These minerals include but are not limited to, rare earth elements, uranium, and precious metals. Coordinated policies within the CIS are crucial for managing these resources efficiently and sustainably. The CIS members work together to develop strategies for exploration, extraction, and processing of these minerals to ensure a stable supply for both regional and global markets.

CIS members

The CIS members leverage unique strengths to enhance regional cooperation and economic modernisation. Russia is a global energy powerhouse, excelling in fossil fuels and renewable energy initiatives. Kazakhstan capitalises on its vast mineral resources with significant investments in renewables, while Azerbaijan focuses on oil and gas exports, diversifying into alternative energy. Belarus modernises through high-tech and renewable energy sectors, and Uzbekistan diversifies its energy portfolio and industrial base. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan exploit their hydroelectric potential to boost exports and growth. Armenia strategically enhances regional trade and energy projects, leveraging its prime location and resources, while Moldova focuses on energy security through regional cooperation and infrastructure development. Collectively, these nations drive progress within the CIS framework.
