ANZUS Alliance
Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition
Facilitating market development across Australia, New Zealand and the United States
The ANZUS Treaty, signed in 1951, is a security pact that binds Australia, New Zealand, and the United States in a mutual defence agreement. Originally aimed at ensuring collective security in the Pacific region during the Cold War, the treaty has evolved to address contemporary challenges, including the strategic importance of critical minerals, policy coordination, and the energy transition. Critical minerals are essential for producing high-tech devices, renewable energy technologies, and advanced defence systems. The ANZUS alliance facilitates cooperation in securing these vital resources, ensuring that supply chains remain stable and resilient. Australia, with its vast mineral wealth, is a key supplier of critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. ANZUS helps streamline policies and investments to bolster mineral extraction and processing capabilities, so its members are at the forefront of driving policy initiatives that support the energy transition. The alliance promotes the development and deployment of renewable energy technologies, leveraging each member country's technological advancements and research capabilities. Through coordinated policies, ANZUS aims to reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and support the global shift towards a low-carbon economy. By fostering a stable geopolitical environment, the alliance creates favourable conditions for trade and investment. This includes the development of infrastructure projects, the expansion of renewable energy markets, and the enhancement of industrial capacities.
