African Union Peace and Security Council

Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition

Facilitating market development across the AUPSC

The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) was established in 2004 as a key organ of the African Union to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent. Its formation marked a significant step in the African Union's commitment to preventing conflicts, managing crises, and ensuring rapid and effective responses to security threats. The AUPSC's significance is highlighted by its capacity to facilitate coordinated interventions, thereby preventing the escalation of violence and fostering a stable environment conducive to development. The AUPSC's membership is organised into five regional groups: Central Africa (Burundi, Cameroon, Chad), Eastern Africa (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Uganda), Northern Africa (Morocco, Tunisia), Southern Africa (Namibia, South Africa, Zambia), and Western Africa (Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal). This regional division allows the AUPSC to tailor its responses to each area’s unique political, social, and cultural contexts. In the realms of critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition, the AUPSC's role is crucial. By maintaining peace and stability, the AUPSC ensures the safe and efficient extraction and transportation of critical minerals essential for economic growth and the global energy transition. The Council's efforts support the security of supply chains and contribute to the geopolitical stability needed for sustainable development and market development across Africa.
