World Trade Organization

Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition

Facilitating market development across the WTO

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the global forum for negotiating trade agreements and resolving trade disputes between its 164 member countries. Established in 1995, the WTO promotes an open, rules-based, non-discriminatory multilateral trading system. This system aims to reduce tariffs and other barriers to the free flow of goods, services, and investments between nations. A vital function of the WTO is administering multilateral trade agreements, such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). These agreements establish standard rules and principles that member countries agree to follow, fostering greater stability in international commerce. The WTO also provides a platform for countries to negotiate new trade liberalisation measures and to settle trade disputes through its dispute settlement mechanism. As the global economy becomes increasingly interconnected, the WTO plays a vital role in facilitating trade, promoting economic growth, addressing supply chain disruptions, and transitioning to more sustainable economic models. Through its work, the WTO seeks to ensure the international trading system remains open and, fair for all members.
