The Arab League

Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition

Facilitating market development across the Arab League

The Arab League, officially known as the League of Arab States, is a regional organization established on March 22, 1945. It comprises 22 member countries across North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, and the Horn of Africa. The Arab League aims to strengthen ties among its member states, coordinate their policies, and promote common interests. Its primary goals include fostering political, economic, cultural, scientific, and social cooperation and safeguarding its members' sovereignty and independence. The League's headquarters is in Cairo, Egypt. It is crucial in addressing regional conflicts, facilitating economic collaboration, and promoting cultural exchange. The Arab League has been instrumental in various peace processes and development initiatives in the Arab world. Despite challenges, it remains a significant forum for dialogue and cooperation among Arab nations, addressing contemporary issues such as economic development, education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. The League also supports efforts toward achieving greater regional stability and prosperity. Syria's membership in the Arab League was suspended on November 12, 2011. This decision was made in response to the Syrian government's violent crackdown on protesters during the Syrian Civil War, which began in early 2011. The suspension aimed to pressure the Syrian government to end the violence and engage in dialogue with the opposition.
