Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition

The Energy Transition in Laos

Laos is positioning itself strategically in Southeast Asia’s energy transition, leveraging its abundant hydropower potential to drive its clean energy future. As the country continues to develop its critical mineral sector, particularly in copper, tin, and antimony, it is poised to play a key role in the regional supply chain for renewable energy technologies. While traditionally reliant on coal for energy production, Laos is now diversifying its energy mix with an increased focus on hydropower to meet both domestic demand and regional energy needs. Laos’ critical minerals, including bismuth and lead, are increasingly sought after for use in clean technologies, positioning the country as an emerging player in global supply chains. The government is also aligning its policies with ESG standards, which are guiding the responsible development of both the energy and mining sectors. Laos’ strategic location within the ASEAN region and its growing regional energy connectivity are key to its broader ambition to become a critical hub for sustainable energy and resource development.
