Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition

The Energy Transition in Moldova

Moldova is actively pursuing energy diversification and regional energy connectivity to strengthen its clean energy transition. With a mix of natural gas, coal, and hydropower, Moldova is focusing on increasing its renewable energy capacity and enhancing its cross-border grid integration to improve energy security and sustainability. The country is also exploring ways to leverage its natural resources for broader economic growth, including critical mineral sectors like crude raw steel and sheet steel production. While Moldova’s mineral production is limited, its strategic focus on ESG policies and regional cooperation is helping it build a more sustainable energy future. As a member of various international organisations such as the United Nations, WTO, and the European Union’s Eastern Partnership (EaP), Moldova is positioning itself to contribute to European clean energy goals. By continuing to improve its energy infrastructure and align with EU energy regulations, Moldova aims to strengthen its role in regional supply chains and become an important player in Europe’s energy transition.
