Hubei Province
Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition
The Energy Transition in Hubei Province
Hubei Province, located in central China, plays a pivotal role in the country’s energy transition, underpinned by its abundant reserves of critical minerals and commitment to sustainable development. The province is rich in essential minerals such as magnesium, iron, copper, silver, gold, and lead, vital for producing renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. These minerals are integral to China’s green energy ambitions and technological innovations. Hubei is advancing its energy transition through strategic initiatives, including developing green hydrogen production and storage. The province has launched an ambitious hydrogen plan to deploy 7,000 fuel cell vehicles and establish 100 hydrogen refuelling stations, with Wuhan set to become a key hub for hydrogen technology. Additionally, Hubei is leading the way in hydrogen production with the Daye Green Power Project, which integrates photovoltaic power generation with green hydrogen production and is also pioneering China’s first deep underground cavern hydrogen storage project in Daye City. Hubei is also focused on decarbonising its transportation sector, exemplified by the Han Yi Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Line for hydrogen-powered heavy trucks. Moreover, the province is implementing low-carbon transformation strategies across industries such as steel, cement, and coking in alignment with national targets for carbon neutrality by 2060. Hubei is leveraging its critical mineral resources and renewable energy capabilities through these initiatives to contribute to China’s broader goals.
