Mayotte
Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition
The Energy Transition in Mayotte
Mayotte, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, confronts significant challenges in its pursuit of energy sustainability. In 2021, the cost of electricity generation was among the highest globally, reaching nearly €350/MWh, with fossil fuels accounting for over 95% of production. To address these challenges, Mayotte has set ambitious goals, aiming for renewable energy to constitute 30% of final consumption by 2020 and striving for a 100% renewable energy rate by 2030. Initiatives include deploying photovoltaic installations, converting thermal power plants to bioliquids, implementing a 12 MW biomass power plant, and exploring geothermal potential. However, progress has been hindered by high production costs and technical limitations, with solar energy contributing only about 5.9% of the energy mix in 2019. As an overseas department of France, Mayotte participates in various international organisations, reflecting its integration into both regional and global frameworks. These affiliations provide opportunities for collaboration and support in addressing the island's energy challenges.
