PGMs in North America
The US has the highest PGM grade mine in the world
North America is estimated to have produced around 365 koz of platinum in 2021, around 1 moz of palladium and just 20 koz of rhodium. The most significant source of PGM supply in the United States is extracted from the J-M Reef, and is mined by Sibanye-Stillwater at its Stillwater and East Boulder mines located in Montana. It is a palladium-rich deposit and has the highest known PGM grade in the world. Eagles mine operated by Lundin Mining produces a small quantity of platinum and palladium from by-product nickel and copper production. PGMs are mined in Canada from Thunder Bay at the famous Lac de Iles mine which is a palladium-rich PGM deposit with by-product gold, copper and nickel production and comprises underground and surface operations. There are also a number junior polymetallic PGM projects located across the United States in Alaska and Minnesota. In Canada, there are also many other identifiable PGM projects at the exploration stage.
